
School Committee Members Honored
RIASC's 2010 Annual Meeting was held at Save the Bay Headquarters on May 8, 2010. Attendees were impressed by the facility that is located on Narragansett Bay, in spite of the torrential downpours and the lightening show! Attendees heard presentations on the state of Rhode Island's economy and the Fiscal Stresses Impacting State Government. Commissioner Gist presented on the status on the state's Race to the Top application. Leadership Development Academy graduates received their Board of Regent's recognition that day. The graduates were Denise Arsenault, Sandra Flowers, David Patten, Mark Rafanelli, Lisa Tomasso, and Richard Welch. Also, two school committee members received the Howard Kay award for outstanding school committee leadership -- Katherine Patenaude of Coventry and Louis Sposato of Westerly. Congratulations to all! RIASC appreciates your commitment to professional development. Thanks to all attendees who gave their time to attend this informative, and timely program.
Ernest Marcure Receives 2009 Howard Kay Award
Ernest Marcure, Scituate school committee Chair was honored with the Howard Kay Award at the 2009 RIASC Annual Meeting held in Providence. The award was presented to him by fellow Scituate school committee member, Patricia Archambault. Upon receipt of the Award, Ernie thanked his colleagues and most importantly his family who were present at the award ceremony. Congratulations Ernie!
MICHAEL CROWLEY ELECTED RIASC PRESIDENT
Michael Crowley, Chair of the Middletown School Committee, was elected President of the Rhode Island Association of School Committees at the Association's 2008 Annual Meeting. Crowley has served on the RIASC Executive Committee since 2002. A former History teacher and member of the Peace Corps, Mike has pledged to provide professional development opportunities for school committee candidates prior to the upcoming elections.
WELCOME NEW MEMBERS!
The Rhode Island Association of School Committees would like to welcome over 60 new school committee members. Most new members took advantage of the opportunity to attend our New Member Training meeting on November 22, 2008. Meeting the responsibilities of being a school committee member requires a wide variety of skills, knowledge, and abilities. The New Member Training meeting assists both new and seasoned school committee members by providing pertinent and timely information on the essentials of their governance role.

Jo Eva Gaines and Rosa Quinonez Crowley Achieve Professional Development Recognition Status
The Rhode Island Association of School Committees (RIASC) commends the following school committee members for participating in over 15 hours of school committee professional development through RIASC's Leadership Development Academy: Jo Eva Gaines of Newport Rosa Quinonez Crowley of Cumberland. We are proud of all of our members who have made the commitment to ongoing professional development to improve their effectiveness and meet the challenges of their governance role.

Ted Crowley and Joanne Bonollo Graduate from RIASC's Leadership Development Academy
The Rhode Island Association of School Committees (RIASC) commends the following school committee members for participating in over 15 hours of school committee professional development through RIASC's Leadership Development Academy: Ted Crowley, Cumberland School Committee chair and Joanne Bonollo, Pawtucket School Committee member. In 2004, RIASC was instrumental in passing a law calling for a voluntary professional development program for school committee members. After a year of planning and a national survey of school committee training, the program was unveiled.

The Rhode Island Association of School Committees (RIASC) commends the following school committee members for participating in over 15 hours of school committee professional development through RIASC's Leadership Development Academy: Patrick Guida of Barrington; Jean Harnois of Smithfield; Scott Mueller of South Kingstown; Nancy Sprengelmeyer of Coventry; and Deborah Thurston of Barrington. In 2004, RIASC was instrumental in passing a law calling for a voluntary professional development program for school committee members.
