RIASC’s 2017 Annual Meeting – Heathy Minds, Healthy Students

RIASC’s Annual Meeting was held on May 6 and dealt with a variety of topics with regard to understanding and creating student centered policies on creating health and well-being.  Check out our videos from the day on this website.  Professional development recognitions were also part of the day.  Members were celebrated for their accomplishments and for exhibiting their commitment to lifelong learning.IMG_0899IMG_0904IMG_0900IMG_0895

RIASC’s 2016 ANNUAL MEETING – THE MASSACHUSETTS MODEL

img_0633The 2016 Annual Meeting was well attended and it received rave reviews.  Many members received professional development hours and recognition.  Congratulations to our graduates, some of who attended and received their Board of Education recognition.

RIPEC GOVERNANCE STUDY

At our School Committee Chair meeting, John Simmons of RIPEC presented a Governance Study comparing Massachusetts to Rhode Island.

RIASC’s LEADERSHIP ACADEMY

img_0423Participate in RIASC’s Leadership Academy.  Upon completion of 15 hours of approved training through the Academy,  RIASC members receive special recognition from the Rhode Island Board of Education. RIASC members also receive recognition when they obtain over 50 hours, over 100 hours and over 200 hours.

In 2010, the General Assembly passed a law requiring Rhode Island school committee members to annually undertake 6 hours of RIASC professional development.

§ 16-2-9  General powers and duties of school committees. – (a) The entire care, control, and management of all public school interests of the several cities and towns shall be vested in the school committees of the several cities and towns. School committees shall have, in addition to those enumerated in this title, the following powers and duties:

(26) To annually undertake a minimum of six (6) hours of professional development as set forth and described in § 16-2-5.1.

§ 16-2-5.1  Professional development. – (a) The Rhode Island College in cooperation with the Rhode Island association of school committees shall develop a professional development educational program for Rhode Island school committees, that will include instruction in labor and labor relations, negotiating collective bargaining agreements, employee contract analysis, school finance, school law; duties and responsibilities of the committee, duties and responsibilities of the superintendent, ethics, the requirements of the open meetings law, student achievement, strategic planning, educational standards, student assessment, school accountability, data interpretation and analysis, collaboration building, advocacy, annual performance evaluation of the school superintendent and the local school committee, and any other topics as the Rhode Island association of school committees may deem to be necessary.

(b) In conformity with § 16-60-4(15), the board of education shall approve the professional development program and create a process for recognizing school committee members that successfully complete the program in part or in whole.

RIASC members have logged over 8,000 hours of professional development.  Participate in RIASC’s Leadership Academy and join the over 200 members who have graduated from the program!

RIASC members with either 50+ hours, 100+ hours or 200+ hours of professional development are awarded a Master’s Academy certificate at our annual meeting.


ATTORNEY GENERAL’S OPEN GOVERNMENT SUMMIT

If you were unable to attend the Attorney General’s Open Government Summit in August, following is a link to stream the session.

RIASC members will be granted 3 hours of professional development for attending or viewing the seminar.


REQUEST FOR APPROVAL OF “EXTERNAL” TRAINING

The RIASC Board met and adopted a policy for approval of external training for RIASC members.  If you plan to pursue professional development outside of RIASC sponsored training, please complete the request form below and fax it to (401) 272-9834 at least two weeks prior to the session.

RIASC members lead very busy lives and we hope this initiative will assist them in meeting their mandatory training requirements.
